Mayo, MD received its name from Commodore Isaac Mayo, who was well known in the mid 1800’s for his accomplishments in the Mexican–American War. Commodore Mayo held a large tract of land on the South River, known then as "Mayo's Neck".
Mayo is located south of Annapolis and is situated along a peninsula between the South River and the Rhode River both of which are tributaries of Chesapeake Bay.
Mayo has a total area of 9.5 square miles and a population of over 8,000.
